About

Sense of Calm™

We're a small Derby-based family company. It is our aim to serve our local area in accessible locations. Though we are receiving positive feedback from our attendees, we're happy to review feedback to help shape what we do.

As well as being comforting and calming, research has shown that sensory play starting at an early age using sensory toys can build babies’ cognitive skills & brain development. Not only that, it can improve alertness and awareness.

Pop-Up Sensory

These sessions are a wonderful bonding activity for you and your baby or child. The bespoke Sensory Area creates a welcoming hideaway for your child to play with a range of sensory toys. We use lights and sounds to create a comforting and exciting experience for your little one, and you may even find it provides a small oasis of calm to your busy day too. You have permission to forget the ‘to do’ list, the ‘should be doing’ list and just be present in the moment with your child and the precious bonding opportunity it creates.

Little Tummy Tigers - Tummy Time & Sensory Play Workshops

This fun 5 week set of workshops, run by Jen who has completed Tummy Time Practitioner accredited training, include songs, story time, tummy time tips and sensory play to encourage baby to get used to Tummy Time as a position for play. Tummy time is suitable from birth helps prevents flat head syndrome, and promotes physical and brain development for baby. The workshops aim to help with any challenges or misconceptions to tummy time and bring the fun and bonding time to this supervised play position.

Founder, Director

The Founder and driving force behind Sense of Calm, Jen delivers the Pop-Up Sensory sessions and Little Tummy Tigers workshops, as well as managing the bookings, social media and advertising. She is a creative force and her artwork is the basis for the original characters and concepts on the website and around you during her sessions.

"As a mummy myself to a vivacious 4 year old, I can appreciate how on the go parenting can be, and how valuable social interaction and friendship building with other parents is. We run Pop-Up Sensory in the friendly community centre in Mickleover Village, which gives access to their Old School Tea Rooms, and do our Little Tummy Tigers workshops at the relaxing venue of Hilton Village Hall, Hilton as well as weekend Little Tummy Tiger sessions at Mickleover Community Centre, providing a perfect opportunity for working parents to join in the fun."

Jen created Sense of Calm to enable parents and caregivers to bring their child to a calming experience that encourages bonding and connection, incorporating cognitive development and learning through sensory play. While developing Pop-Up Sensory she felt that a quiet and relaxed café setting with a semi-enclosed sensory space that parents could have exclusive access to would facilitate social connections between caregivers and would especially support new parents to feel connected to others as well as building their special bond with their child.

"Especially when I was a new mum, sometimes I just needed a little bit of calm in my day. For that reason I created Sense of Calm to help other parents find a fun daytime activity and (child permitting!) a little tranquillity for you both. Tummy time is so important to baby's development so as a Tummy Time Practitioner it's a joy to bring the fun to this supervised play position and help parents/caregivers overcome any challenges or uncertainty, and relax and bond with their little one."
